As the featured artist at the Art on No Gallery in June, Ellen Joffe-Halpern will show a retrospective of floral themed paintings, “A Daffodil is a Daffodil is a Daffodil”. The opening reception will coincide with the “First Fridays Artswalk”, June 1, 2012, 5-8PM at the Art On No Gallery, upstairs at Art On No, 311 North St., Pittsfield, MA.
Joffe-Halpern, painting under the name Joffe, will present depictions of common garden flowers. These are works on paper and mostly mixed media with a varied combination of acrylic, oil, pastel, ink, watercolor, and pencil. These works have been completed over the last ten years. The subject matter remains the same, however. The artist’s aesthetics, perceptions, and use of media have evolved over time. Through this exhibit of floral work, one can see how Joffe-Halpern tackles the same subject matter over and over, coming up with fresh approaches while retaining the recurring thread of her approach to the creative process.
Joffe-Halpern describes her approach to these works: “There is a long tradition of still-life painting. I don’t know how to slow life down so that it is still. I can paint each season’s fresh blossoms in the moment and hold them that way. I transform what I see and experience into color, shape, pattern, and line. The flowers bloom anew each season, fresh and glorious. In the meantime, I have changed, the realities around me have changed, and I see my world through this veil of time passing.”
Joffe-Halpern was one of the original members of the Art On No artists group and works out of Studio #11. She has worked for over thirty-five years in Berkshire and Bennington Counties as an artist, expressive art therapist, and teacher.
